Frequently Asked Questions

Westminster, St James's and the Strand make the easiest first base, with Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden and the West End theatres within walking distance. Raffles London at The OWO, Corinthia London and The Savoy are all here. If shopping and Hyde Park matter more, choose Mayfair or Knightsbridge; the City suits travellers who want Tower Bridge on the doorstep and a quieter evening.

Most have both. Bvlgari Hotel London has a 25-metre pool, Shangri-La The Shard a sky pool on level 52 and Pan Pacific London an indoor infinity pool, while Corinthia London, The Peninsula London, Raffles London at The OWO and Four Seasons Hotel London at Tower Bridge pair full spas with indoor pools. Rosewood London and The Beaumont Mayfair have spas without a swimming pool, and The Goring and The Stafford London have no spa.

Late spring to early autumn brings the longest days, the royal parks at their greenest and the best weather for terraces and gardens, such as the one at The Goring. It is also the busiest season. From late November the West End is lit up for Christmas, which many visitors find just as appealing. Rain is possible in any month, so pack a layer whatever the season.

Pan Pacific London in the City combines spacious rooms, family rooms and an indoor infinity pool, and families with small children praise the service. Corinthia London has interconnecting rooms and a pool near Trafalgar Square, The Peninsula London offers generous rooms and interconnecting options, and Rosewood London has family rooms and residences, though no pool. At Four Seasons Hotel London at Tower Bridge the pool can be busy with children.

From Heathrow, the Heathrow Express runs non-stop to Paddington, and the Elizabeth line crosses central London via Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road and Liverpool Street, which is handy for Mayfair, Holborn and the City. From Gatwick, trains run to Victoria, a short walk from The Goring. A black cab or pre-booked car is the simplest door-to-door option but slow in traffic, and several hotels can arrange airport transfers.

Afternoon tea is part of the London hotel tradition. The Savoy serves it in the Thames Foyer, Claridge's in the Foyer with more than 50 teas to choose from, and The Dorchester in The Promenade, while The Goring offers a classic English version. Milestone Hotel Kensington, Hotel Café Royal and The Beaumont Mayfair serve it too. Non-residents are usually welcome, but book ahead, especially at weekends.
