Frequently Asked Questions

Stay in the Altstadt, where Marienplatz, the Frauenkirche, the Viktualienmarkt and the Hofbräuhaus are all within a few minutes of each other on foot. BEYOND by Geisel, DO & CO Hotel München, Rosewood Munich, Mandarin Oriental, Munich and Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski München are all here. If you arrive by train, Koenigshof on Karlsplatz and Rocco Forte The Charles Hotel near the Hauptbahnhof are just as convenient, and the old town is still within walking distance.

Koenigshof, Rosewood Munich, Mandarin Oriental, Munich, Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski München and Rocco Forte The Charles Hotel all offer family rooms. The indoor pools at Rosewood, the Kempinski and The Charles help on a rainy day, although The Charles closes its pool to children after 4pm. Couples are well looked after at the small, personal BEYOND by Geisel on Marienplatz and at the design-led DO & CO Hotel München, both in the heart of the old town.

Munich is not a waterfront city in the way Hamburg is, but the Isar runs just east of the old town. Hotel München Palace is the closest, on the quiet upper bank of the river in Haidhausen and a pleasant walk from the English Garden. From Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski München, Maximilianstraße leads straight down to the Isar bridges. For a swim with a view, Mandarin Oriental, Munich has a small outdoor pool on its roof terrace.

Rocco Forte The Charles Hotel and Rosewood Munich both have a spa with an indoor pool, sauna and gym; The Charles also offers beauty treatments, and Rosewood runs yoga and fitness classes. Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski München has an indoor pool and a wellness area, though some guests find the pool small. Mandarin Oriental, Munich has a sauna, a steam bath and a small rooftop pool but no treatment spa, and Hotel München Palace has a sauna and steam room.

Late spring to early autumn is the classic season, with the beer gardens open, long evenings and walks in the English Garden. Oktoberfest, from late September into early October, fills the city and pushes hotel rates sharply up, and the big trade fairs have a similar effect. Advent brings Christmas markets to Marienplatz and the old town, while January and February are cold and quieter, and a good time for day trips to the Alps.

Munich Airport lies north-east of the city, and the S-Bahn runs directly to Marienplatz, Karlsplatz and the Hauptbahnhof in around 40 minutes. Koenigshof has an S-Bahn station right next door, and Rocco Forte The Charles Hotel is a short walk from the Hauptbahnhof, where long-distance trains arrive. Several hotels, including BEYOND by Geisel, Rosewood Munich and Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski München, can arrange an airport shuttle. Cars cannot always reach the entrances in the pedestrianised old town.

Mandarin Oriental, Munich is home to Matsuhisa, Munich, with the Japanese-Peruvian cooking of chef Nobu Matsuhisa. At Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski München, the Schwarzreiter Restaurant serves Bavarian-inspired fine dining, while Florio at Rocco Forte The Charles Hotel focuses on Italian cooking with regional, seasonal produce. DO & CO Hotel München has a restaurant and bar that guests happily stay in for, and Rosewood Munich serves Austrian, German and local dishes.
