Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the holiday you want. Newquay and the north coast bring surf beaches, cliffs and some bustle, with The Harbour and The Lewinnick Lodge, while Port Gaverne Hotel by Port Isaac is quieter. The Roseland and the south coast, with Lugger Hotel, The Idle Rocks and Talland Bay Hotel, are gentler harbour country. The Lizard, home to Mullion Cove Hotel & Spa and Housel Bay Hotel, is wilder and more remote.

The Harbour is a few steps from Newquay's Harbour Beach, and Port Gaverne Hotel lies in a cove by the beach. At Housel Bay Hotel steps lead down to a tidal beach. Lugger Hotel is on the water's edge in Portloe and The Idle Rocks on the quayside in St Mawes. The Lewinnick Lodge, Mullion Cove Hotel & Spa and Talland Bay Hotel look out to sea from higher up, with Fistral Beach a walk from The Lewinnick Lodge.

Among the hotels on this page, Mullion Cove Hotel & Spa on the Lizard is the one with both: a spa and wellness centre, a fitness centre and an outdoor pool with the sea in view. Bodmin Jail Hotel has a fitness centre, but most of the others are small inns and harbour hotels without a pool or spa, so check before you book if a swim matters.

Late spring and early autumn are often the sweet spot, with quieter lanes, easier parking and long walks on the coast path. July and August bring the warmest weather but also the heaviest traffic and full beaches, especially in the school holidays. Winter is quiet and atmospheric, with storm watching by the fire, though some days are short and grey. The weather can change within hours in any season, so pack a warm, waterproof layer.

Trains from London run the length of the county, stopping at Bodmin Parkway, Truro and Penzance, and Newquay has a branch line and its own airport. Without a car, Newquay works best, as The Harbour is within walking distance of the station and close to the town's beaches. For most of the other hotels, which lie on narrow lanes in small villages, a car makes life far easier and opens up day trips along the coast.

The South West Coast Path runs right through the garden at Housel Bay Hotel on the Lizard, and from Talland Bay Hotel you step straight onto it, with Looe and Polperro within walking distance along the coast. Port Gaverne Hotel has the North Cornwall Heritage Coast on its doorstep, Lugger Hotel in Portloe is a natural stop on the path, and Mullion Cove Hotel & Spa has good cliff walks close by.

Families are best served around Newquay. The Lewinnick Lodge has family rooms within walking distance of Fistral and Crantock beaches, and The Harbour has family rooms with kitchenettes a few steps from Harbour Beach. Couples tend to prefer the small harbour and cove hotels: Lugger Hotel, The Idle Rocks, Talland Bay Hotel and Port Gaverne Hotel. Talland Bay Hotel also welcomes dogs, as does The Lewinnick Lodge in certain room types.
