Frequently Asked Questions

Windermere and Bowness make the easiest first base, with lake cruises, shops, restaurants and a railway station close at hand. Langdale Chase Hotel, Storrs Hall Hotel, Linthwaite House Hotel and Gilpin Hotel & Lake House are all in this area. If you would rather have quiet evenings and the high fells on the doorstep, choose Keswick and the north, home to Borrowdale Gates Hotel and Armathwaite Hall Hotel & Spa.

Armathwaite Hall Hotel & Spa has a full spa built around an infinity pool, with a hydrotherapy pool, sauna, steam room and a large outdoor hot tub. At Gilpin Hotel & Lake House, the Lake House has a pool, hot tub and treatment rooms reserved for Lake House guests. The Samling Hotel has a hot tub, but many of the country houses here have no pool at all, so check before you book if a swim matters.

Langdale Chase Hotel and Storrs Hall Hotel both stand on the shore of Windermere. Langdale Chase has its own jetty and can arrange sailing days and lessons, and at Storrs Hall most bedrooms look out over the lake. Linthwaite House Hotel is not on the shore but looks down on the water from a hilltop, and guests can take out its rowing boats. Armathwaite Hall Hotel & Spa is close to Bassenthwaite Lake.

Spring and early autumn are often the sweet spot, with quieter roads and fells that are either freshly green or turning colour. Summer brings the longest days but also the heaviest traffic and crowds around Windermere and Bowness, especially in the school holidays. Winter is cosy, with open fires and empty paths, though the days are short. Rain can fall in any month, so pack waterproofs whatever the season.

For most of these hotels, yes. Trains run to Windermere, connecting with the main line at Oxenholme, so a car-free stay works best in Windermere or Bowness, where buses and the lake steamers help you get around. The hotels near Keswick, Borrowdale and Bassenthwaite Lake are far easier to reach with your own car, which also makes day trips into the quieter valleys simple.

Borrowdale Gates Hotel lies at the foot of Cat Bells in the Borrowdale valley, with walking and climbing routes close by and Derwentwater a short drive away. Armathwaite Hall Hotel & Spa, near Bassenthwaite Lake and Skiddaw, has woodland and a deer park on the doorstep. In the south, Rothay Manor Hotel is a short walk from Ambleside, a classic starting point for fell walks.

Gilpin Hotel & Lake House has a Michelin-starred restaurant alongside a more casual pan-Asian one, and Linthwaite House Hotel is home to Henrock by Simon Rogan, which serves small plates and sharing dishes made with local ingredients from Wednesday to Sunday. Rothay Manor Hotel has a modern fine-dining restaurant, and Langdale Chase Hotel serves a table d'hôte dinner with lake views. Most of the hotels also serve afternoon tea.
