Frequently Asked Questions

All of these hotels are in the walkable centre, so the choice is more about feel than distance. Bergen Børs Hotel and Opus XVI on Vågsallmenningen put you closest to Vågen harbour and the fish market, with Bryggen and the Fløibanen funicular a short walk away. Charmante Skostredet Hôtel and Skostredet Hotel & Spa are a few streets inland near the cathedral, a little away from the busiest tourist spots and close to local cafés and restaurants.

Bergen Børs Hotel and Skostredet Hotel & Spa both offer family rooms, and Charmante Skostredet Hôtel has rooms that connect, which helps if you travel with older children. For couples, Charmante Skostredet Hôtel has romantic old-Paris interiors and its own French brasserie, while Opus XVI offers individually designed rooms, a lobby bar hung with work by local artists and afternoon tea on Saturdays.

None of them sits directly on the quay, but Bergen Børs Hotel and Opus XVI come close. Both are on Vågsallmenningen, a couple of minutes from Vågen harbour, and the fish market is about 140 metres from Bergen Børs Hotel. From there the old wooden wharf buildings of Bryggen line the harbour a short walk away. The two Skostredet hotels are a few streets further inland, still within easy walking distance of the water.

Skostredet Hotel & Spa is the spa choice here. Its spa and wellness area is the part guests single out most, especially the sauna and the snow room, and there is also a fitness centre and a garden courtyard with outdoor seating. The other hotels list no spa, although Bergen Børs Hotel and Opus XVI have fitness centres. On a typical rainy Bergen afternoon, a sauna is worth more than you might think.

Late spring and summer bring the longest, lightest days and the easiest conditions for trips into the fjords, though the centre is at its busiest then, with cruise passengers crowding the harbour area. Autumn is quieter but often wet. Winter days are short and dark, with a cosy, festive feel in the run-up to Christmas. Rain can fall at any time of year in Bergen, so pack waterproofs whatever the season.

Bergen Airport Flesland lies about 15 kilometres south of the centre. The Bybanen light rail runs from the airport into the city, and airport buses and taxis are also available; Bergen Børs Hotel can arrange an airport shuttle. Trains from Oslo arrive at Bergen station on the scenic Bergen Line, and the station is within walking distance of all four hotels. A car is of little use in the centre, where parking is limited.

Bergen Børs Hotel has three restaurants built around local produce, including a grand dining room and a tapas restaurant, plus a bar for cocktails and local beers. Charmante Skostredet Hôtel serves French cooking for brunch, lunch and dinner, and Skostredet Hotel & Spa has a Japanese restaurant in the evening. Opus XVI focuses on local seafood alongside vegetarian and vegan dishes, with afternoon tea on Saturdays and lunch concerts from June to August.
