Frequently Asked Questions

Stay around Karl Johans gate if you want to walk everywhere. Hotel Continental, Hotel Bristol and Savoy 1918 are all a few minutes from the main street, the National Theatre and the Royal Palace, with the harbour and its ferries a short stroll away. If you would rather wake up by the water, The Thief on Tjuvholmen is a few minutes from the restaurants of Aker Brygge and about a quarter of an hour's walk from the centre.

Sommerro works well for families, with family rooms, interconnecting rooms and two pools, one of them on the roof. Lysebu Hotel also has family rooms, along with an indoor pool, a large garden and forest trails on the doorstep. Couples tend to look at the more intimate Savoy 1918, with its vintage interiors and calm wellness area, or at The Thief, where some rooms have a balcony and the spa has a hamam.

The Thief stands on the water at Tjuvholmen, with the Aker Brygge promenade a few minutes away, and its rooftop, open in summer, looks out over the city and the Oslofjord. Guests also get free entry to the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art next door. From the hotels around Karl Johan the harbour front is a short walk, while Lysebu Hotel looks out over forest and the Sørkedalen valley rather than water.

THIEF Spa at The Thief has a pool, a Turkish hamam and a sauna, and Sommerro has two pools, including one on the roof, plus a public bath with sauna and beauty treatments. At both, pool and sauna must be booked ahead. Lysebu Hotel has an indoor pool and sauna, Savoy 1918 a smaller wellness area with sauna, and Hotel Bristol a spa that guests say costs extra. Hotel Continental has a gym but no pool or spa.

Late spring and summer bring long, light evenings, outdoor terraces, The Thief's rooftop and easy ferry trips to the islands in the Oslofjord. Early autumn is calmer and often crisp and clear. Winter days are short and the afternoons dark, but snow on the hills around Holmenkollen means skiing within reach of the city, and the centre is at its cosiest in the run-up to Christmas. Pack warm layers whatever the season.

Oslo Airport at Gardermoen lies about 50 kilometres north of the city. The Airport Express Train and regular trains reach Oslo Central Station and the National Theatre in roughly 20 to 30 minutes, so the hotels around Karl Johan are easy without a car. The Thief can arrange an airport shuttle. Lysebu Hotel is a short walk from Voksenkollen metro station and has parking on site, whereas parking in the centre costs extra.

Hotel Continental is home to Eik Annen Etage for fine dining and to Theatercaféen, a meeting place in Oslo for more than a century. At Lysebu Hotel the kitchen serves a new seasonal five-course menu every month, with wines from the hotel's own cellar. Sommerro has seven restaurants, from sushi to Norwegian cooking, and the Library Bar at Hotel Bristol, with live piano music, has drawn politicians, musicians and actors since the 1920s.
