Frequently Asked Questions

Esplanadi and the streets of Kaartinkaupunki make the easiest first base. Hotel Kämp, Hotel Haven, Hotel U14, Hotel F6 and Hotel Fabian are all a few minutes' walk from the Market Square, where ferries leave for Suomenlinna, and from Senate Square and the shops on Aleksanterinkatu. If you arrive by train, NH Collection Helsinki Grand Hansa and the hotels in Kamppi put the Central Station within a short walk.

Most of these hotels have family rooms, and Solo Sokos Hotel Pier 4 offers interconnecting rooms. The larger rooms at Hotel Fabian add a kitchenette, and Hotel U14 has a family-friendly restaurant and welcomes dogs. The spa at Hotel St. George Helsinki is for guests aged 16 and over. Couples often choose Hotel Lilla Roberts for its Art Deco calm, Waldorf Astoria Helsinki for a special occasion or Lapland Hotels Bulevardi for a room with a private sauna.

Solo Sokos Hotel Pier 4 stands on the Katajanokka quay, close to the Viking Line terminal, and its sea-view rooms and rooftop terrace look out over the harbour. Hotel Haven faces the South Harbour and the Market Square, and breakfast is served with views over the square and the water. Hotel Fabian and Hotel Lilla Roberts are a few minutes' walk from the harbour, and from Hotel Kämp it is a short stroll down to the South Harbour.

Hotel St. George Helsinki has a full spa with an indoor pool, saunas, a hammam and a cold plunge pool, open to guests aged 16 and over. Hotel Kämp has a renewed spa with a sauna, and Waldorf Astoria Helsinki a spa with a sauna and steam room for a daily fee. NH Collection Helsinki Grand Hansa, Hotel U14 and Solo Sokos Hotel Pier 4 each have a sauna, and at Lapland Hotels Bulevardi some rooms come with their own.

Late spring and summer are the brightest months, with long light evenings, open-air terraces and easy trips out to the islands. Early autumn is calmer and often still mild. From November to February the days are short, dark and usually cold, but this is the season for saunas, Christmas markets and cosy hotel bars. Outside summer, pack warm layers, as the wind off the sea can bite.

Helsinki-Vantaa Airport lies just under 20 kilometres north of the centre. Local trains run from the airport to the Central Station in around half an hour, which suits the hotels in Kamppi and around Esplanadi, and a taxi takes about as long outside rush hour. Several hotels can arrange an airport transfer. If you arrive by ferry from Stockholm or Tallinn, you land in the harbour, a short taxi or tram ride from most of the hotels.

Lapland Hotels Bulevardi serves modern Lappish cooking at Kultá, where breakfast with smoked reindeer is a favourite. Hotel St. George Helsinki has the Thai restaurant Boon Nam, its own bakery and the glass-roofed Wintergarden Bar, and Hotel Lilla Roberts is home to the bistro Krog Roba. From Ateljee Bar at Solo Sokos Hotel Torni Helsinki you look out across the rooftops. Hotel F6, Hotel Fabian and Hotel Haven focus on breakfast and the bar, so plan to dine out.
