Frequently Asked Questions

Bang Tao and Layan make an easy first base: the airport is about 20 minutes away and the Laguna area has restaurants and shops. Banyan Tree Phuket, Anantara Layan Phuket Resort and The Pavilions Phuket are all here. Kamala and Surin are more central, with Patong within reach for an evening out, home to InterContinental Phuket Resort and The Surin Phuket. For real seclusion, look at Cape Panwa or Nai Thon instead.

Families do well at InterContinental Phuket Resort, with a kids' club, family rooms and interconnecting rooms, at Banyan Tree Phuket, where the villas are spacious, and at The Surin Phuket, which has family cottages, though the many steps take some planning with small children. Couples are drawn to The Shore at Katathani, which is adults only, and to the private pool villas at Paresa Resort Phuket, Keemala, The Naka Phuket and Trisara.

The Surin Phuket stands on Pansea Beach, Trisara by Nai Thon Beach and The Shore at Katathani by Kata Noi Beach. InterContinental Phuket Resort is on Kamala Beach, through a tunnel and some stairs, and Anantara Layan Phuket Resort is a two-minute walk from Layan Beach. On Cape Panwa, Sri Panwa Phuket has a beach below the resort, and at Amatara Welleisure Resort it depends on the tide. Keemala, Paresa Resort Phuket and The Pavilions Phuket sit above the beach.

Wellness is the whole point at Amatara Welleisure Resort, where specialists tailor programmes to each guest and a 55-metre infinity pool overlooks the sea. Anantara Layan Phuket Resort offers yoga, healing sessions and longevity treatments, and Banyan Tree Phuket has a full spa with a quiet lap pool. Keemala adds holistic activities, Paresa Resort Phuket pairs its Thai spa with cooking classes, and Sri Panwa Phuket has a free steam room and sauna.

The west coast is usually driest from roughly November to April, which is also the busiest season. From around May to October the southwest monsoon brings showers, heavy downpours and rougher seas, and red flags on the beaches mean swimming is unsafe because of strong currents. The shoulder months can be quieter and calmer for a resort stay, but villa pools are rarely heated and can feel cool after days of rain.

Phuket International Airport lies in the north of the island and is reached from Europe directly on some routes or via Bangkok. From there, Trisara and the hotels around Layan and Bang Tao are a short drive away, while Kamala, Kata Noi and especially Cape Panwa take considerably longer. Most resorts arrange transfers, and Trisara includes them. Guests note that taxis often take only Thai baht and that ride-hailing cars can take a while to arrive.

Thai cooking is the strong suit: Saffron at Banyan Tree Phuket, Dara at Anantara Layan Phuket Resort and Talung Thai at Paresa Resort Phuket, which serves southern Thai dishes. Keemala's Mala Restaurant has an Indian chef cooking Indian dishes, and Sri Panwa Phuket gathers three dining options at Baba Pool Club, plus the Baba Nest rooftop bar. For sunset drinks, try the 360 bar at The Pavilions Phuket or The Nana at The Naka Phuket.
