Frequently Asked Questions

Bang Niang is the easiest first base. La Solaya Khao Lak and La Vela Khao Lak are both on the beach there, with restaurants and the market a few minutes' walk away. Further south, Moracea by Khao Lak Resort and The Little Shore Khao Lak by Katathani are calmer but still close to town. If you would rather stay put, the larger resorts at Khuk Khak and Bang Sak give you more space and quiet.

Families do well at Avani Plus Khao Lak Resort, with a waterpark and three pools, and at JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort and Spa, whose kids' club guests found best for children from about six. Khao Lak Marriott Beach Resort & Spa and Le Meridien Khao Lak Resort & Spa also have kids' clubs. Couples lean towards The Sarojin, Devasom Khao Lak, The Little Shore Khao Lak by Katathani and the beachfront bungalows at Moracea by Khao Lak Resort.

Every hotel on this page is beachfront. The Little Shore Khao Lak by Katathani faces Nang Thong Beach, La Solaya Khao Lak and La Vela Khao Lak open onto Bang Niang Beach, and Devasom Khao Lak sits by a natural lagoon at Khuk Khak. The Sarojin has direct access to a secluded stretch of sand. At Moracea by Khao Lak Resort the upper rooms mean a climb, so book a beachfront room or bungalow.

The Sarojin has a spa and can arrange massages by the pool, and guests single out the spa at Devasom Khao Lak. JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort and Spa offers traditional Thai massage at Quan Spa, and Moracea by Khao Lak Resort has Bamai Spa for massages and body treatments. The Little Shore Khao Lak by Katathani pairs its spa with a calm mood, and Avani Plus Khao Lak Resort adds yoga classes.

The Andaman coast is usually driest from roughly November to April, which is also when boat trips to the Similan and Surin Islands run and the sea tends to be calmest. From about May to October the southwest monsoon brings heavy showers and rough seas, and red flags on the beach mean strong currents and unsafe swimming. The green season is quieter and very lush, but plan for more days by the pool than in the sea.

Khao Lak has no airport of its own. Most visitors fly into Phuket International Airport, directly on some routes or via Bangkok, and continue by road. Depending on the hotel, the drive takes roughly an hour to an hour and a half, longest to the northern resorts around Bang Sak and Bang Muang. Every hotel here can arrange an airport transfer, and once you arrive, taxis and some resort shuttles get you between the beaches.

Devasom Khao Lak holds One MICHELIN Key, and both its restaurants, TAKOLA Thai Restaurant and Devasom Beach Grill, have been featured in the MICHELIN Guide. The Sarojin serves Mediterranean cooking at Ficus and Thai at The Edge, with breakfast all day. At JW Marriott Khao Lak Resort and Spa, Ta-Krai cooks Thai and Sakura teppanyaki, and Moracea by Khao Lak Resort serves seafood by the beach at Malila. Guests do find prices high at the larger resorts.
