Not every place suits every trip. Here is how the destinations differ, with the hotels we list in each and the guides that narrow the choice further.

Taormina's clifftop grand hotels, baroque towns in the south-east and Greek temples in between. An island for touring with a car; pick one base or two, not a single resort.

The Costa Smeralda's Caribbean-blue water and some of Italy's most exclusive resorts. Best for beach and boat holidays in the north; distances are long and July prices steep.

Grand hotels around the Spanish Steps and a new wave of design addresses in Monti and Trastevere. A city for walking and eating; choose a hotel with a rooftop for the summer heat.

Palazzo hotels on the Grand Canal and the Lido's beach a boat ride away. Made for romance and short stays; crowded, expensive and not built for children's holidays.

Renaissance palaces turned hotels, the Arno at your feet and Tuscany's hills an hour away. A culture city first; go for art, food and day trips, not for a pool.

Fashion-house hotels, the country's most polished service and Lake Como within an hour. For shopping, design and business trips; not a holiday destination in the usual sense.

The tower, a handsome riverside and two good hotels, best as a night on the way to Florence or the coast. Not a destination for a full week.

Cliffside villages, lemon terraces and legendary hotels in Positano and Ravello, at prices to match. Best for couples; the beaches are small and the roads are not for nervous drivers.

Belle Époque villas turned hotels on the water, an hour from Milan: Villa d'Este, Grand Hotel Tremezzo, Passalacqua and the newer Il Sereno and Mandarin Oriental. For couples, boats and long lunches; no beaches to speak of, and the lake is cold for swimming until July.

Castles and wine estates turned resorts across Chianti, Val d'Orcia and the Maremma coast: Castello di Casole, Castiglion del Bosco, Castello del Nero, Borgo Santo Pietro, Il Pellicano. A driving holiday with a car essential; Florence and Pisa have their own pages.
