Tripplo's verdict, based on guest reviews
Tripplo’s analysis · Updated 10 October 2026 · How we review hotels
SIDE Hamburg is a five-star design hotel for travellers who want to be in the middle of things. It stands in the Neustadt, three minutes on foot from the State Opera and Gänsemarkt, and its location is what guests rate highest. They also praise staff who are kind, polite and willing to help, a breakfast described as fantastic, and rooms that are spacious, calm and impeccably clean. The spa, with a pool, sauna and steam bath, and the rooftop terrace and Sky Lounge on the 8th floor give it a resort touch in the city centre. The interior, however, divides opinion. Several guests find the decor retro or dated rather than cutting-edge, and the rooms have quirks: bathrooms behind sliding doors, king beds made of two singles and lighting that takes some learning. Service, while warmly praised overall, has slipped on a few stays. If location, staff and a spa matter more than a fresh interior, it is a strong choice.
Guests score it 8.8 out of 10 — the average across the 10 hotels we list in Hamburg is 9.1.
What Guests Loved
- Location is the point guests rate highest. Most of the centre is within walking distance, and with Gänsemarkt station three minutes away, buses and the underground make it easy to get around Hamburg.
- Guests keep praising the staff as kind, polite and professional, and several describe the team going out of its way, for example helping with a booking transferred to a friend.
Things to Consider
- Several guests find the decor retro or dated rather than design-led, and one felt that the 'design hotel' label raises expectations the interior does not quite meet.
- The bathroom is separated by sliding doors, which feels awkward if you share with anyone other than a partner. King beds are two singles pushed together, the lighting takes some figuring out, and one guest found the toilet flush loud.
Should you book it?
SIDE Hamburg is worth booking for opera-goers and travellers who want to explore the centre on foot — but pick somewhere else if you want a fresh, design-led interior.
