Tripplo's verdict, based on guest reviews
Tripplo’s analysis · Updated 10 October 2026 · How we review hotels
Louis C Jacob Hamburg is a historic five-star hotel for travellers who would rather look at the Elbe than at city streets. It stands on the Elbchaussee in Nienstedten, and guests praise the view over the river from the terrace, the garden, and a house where old-world charm meets clean, modern design. Rooms are spacious and comfortable, breakfast is called fantastic, the restaurants are praised for their food, and staff in the bar and at breakfast are warm and attentive. The trade-off is distance and, at times, polish. The centre is a ride away, and reception does not always match the five-star setting. Guests also mention housekeeping lapses, the occasional cold shower and rooms without air conditioning, and one regular feels some small touches have faded since a change of management. If calm, river views and classic charm come first, it is a rewarding stay; if you want the city on your doorstep, look closer in.
Guests score it 8.8 out of 10 — the average across the 10 hotels we list in Hamburg is 9.1.
What Guests Loved
- Guests rave about the view over the river, especially from the terrace, and about the garden. One regular advises splashing out on a room with a river view, since that is the reason to stay here.
- The historic building sits at the heart of a clean, modern interior with subtle, sophisticated design. Guests praise spacious rooms, comfortable beds and the old-world charm of the house.
Things to Consider
- Nienstedten is in the west of Hamburg, 7 km from Altona station, so you will need public transport or a car to reach the centre. One guest also heard noise from the nearby airport.
- Several guests felt the front desk fell short of the standard of the house, with a manner ranging from overly eager to brusque, and one found the staff not very fluent in English.
Should you book it?
