Tripplo's verdict, based on guest reviews

Tripplo’s analysis · Updated 10 October 2026 · How we review hotels

Ideal for social travellers seeking refined courtyard culture near historic squares. Rocco Forte Hotel De Russie wins exceptional reviews from guests on Booking.com and Google. Guests enjoy the expansive tiered Mediterranean secret garden and the sophisticated courtyard social scene at Stravinskij Bar, alongside refined Olga Polizzi interior design. However, guests should note that there is high demand for garden terrace seating, and standard rooms carry premium pricing.

Positioned between the Spanish Steps and Piazza del Popolo, Hotel De Russie is defined by its expansive tiered gardens and understated Roman elegance. It serves as a sophisticated sanctuary for travelers seeking a blend of high-end design and a vibrant social scene in the heart of the city.

Guests score it 9.0 out of 10 — the average across the 19 hotels we list in Rome is 9.2.

  • The tiered Mediterranean garden offers a quiet retreat from the city's intensity, featuring rose bushes and orange trees. It serves as an architectural extension of the Pincio Hill, providing rare outdoor space in central Rome.
  • Situated on Via del Babuino, the hotel is steps away from Piazza del Popolo and the Spanish Steps. This location provides immediate access to Rome’s premier shopping district and historic landmarks without the noise of main thoroughfares.

“The best hotel we've stayed at in Europe, hands down. We spent our July family vacation here with young children, and the staff went above and beyond to cater to them at every turn. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful, and the location can't be beat, right by the best shopping in the city. Special praise for the concierge, who was truly amazing. They set up activities, transportation, and restaurant reservations for us, making the whole trip effortless. Honestly, the entire staff is exceptional. We will certainly be back. If you're traveling to Rome with family, look no further than Hotel de Russie.”

“We recently stayed at Hotel de Russie and had a wonderful experience. The hotel itself is beautiful, with gorgeous surroundings and an excellent location in the city, making it very easy to explore Rome while still feeling calm and secluded. The service throughout most of our stay was great, the food was very good, and the room, although slightly small, was quiet, clean and comfortable. We especially appreciated that the hotel listened to our request before arrival and kindly provided a pregnancy pillow, which made a real difference during the stay. The marble bathroom and modern shower were lovely, and the spa area, while not huge, had everything needed including a sauna and steam room. It was always clean and relaxing, and although there were only a few seating areas, we never struggled to find a bed. There were unfortunately a couple of frustrating moments. The hotel repeatedly contacted us regarding a restaurant reservation that belonged to another guest with the same surname. Even after explaining several times that it was not us, the messages continued, and the handling of it felt a bit dismissive. The airport transfer we arranged through the hotel was also disappointing. The driver was nowhere to be found when we landed, and we spent around 40 minutes to an hour searching for him after a long flight, especially frustrating considering the premium price paid for the service. When he finally appeared, there was no apology from the driver himself. However, the hotel handled the situation professionally afterwards, apologised sincerely, and kindly offered us a complimentary breakfast, which was genuinely appreciated. Despite these issues, we truly loved our stay and would absolutely consider returning in the future.”

“This hotel is lovely, with a beautiful garden, great location, terrific rooms, spectacular service, and all typical amenities you'd expect of a five star hotel. What blew me away though was when we requested a crib for our 1 year old, they also provided us a changing pad, baby bath, diaper pail, and even an adorable poncho towel and slippers for the kid. I've genuinely never seen that anywhere else, even at other high end hotels and resorts. We would come back here in a heartbeat and I recommend it unconditionally.”
