Tripplo's verdict, based on guest reviews

Tripplo’s analysis · Updated 10 October 2026 · How we review hotels

Abaton Island suits couples and families who want their own pool or hot tub without leaving the resort. Every room has one, the beach is private, and five restaurants cover the week. The scale is large rather than intimate, the beachfront gets busy in high season, and the wifi does not reach every corner.

Set along the coast of Hersonissos, Abaton Island Resort & Spa combines Cretan design cues with private pools, hot tubs, and a dedicated beachfront. It suits couples and families seeking a self-contained luxury base with varied dining options, rather than travelers wanting a compact boutique stay.

Guests score it 9.0 out of 10 — the average across the 53 hotels we list on Crete is 9.1.

Featured in our guides: 6 luxury boutique hotels in Crete: The best in 2026, 11 luxury hotels with private pools in Crete: The best in 2026, 12 luxury beachfront hotels in Crete: The best in 2026

  • Nearly every accommodation category includes a private plunge pool, outdoor hot tub, or terrace, giving guests a sense of seclusion rarely found at large-scale resorts.
  • Guests can walk straight from their room to a dedicated private beach area, avoiding the crowds often found on public stretches nearby Hersonissos.

“What a wonderful hotel and well worth 5 stars. The staff were fantastic and we had a great room with a sea view. The restaurants were very good, although unfortunately we didn't get a chance to visit the steak restaurant. Perhaps next time. Facilities were very good i.e. pools, places to sit and relax, etc. There's not much immediately around the hotel but Hersonissos and Malia are a short bus ride away. Malia was the better site as it was less touristy. Old Hersonissos was good with a few nice restaurants. Bus into Heraklion was OK and the archaeological museum there was fantastic. Didn't get a chance to visit Knossos but hear that is well worth a visit. The Abaton hotel is highly recommended.”

“Simply embarrassing. We had ants in our room, killed a spider, and even found cockroaches in the room – and the hotel didn’t seem to care. We paid €12,000 for a 10-day stay, yet the breakfast and dinner buffet served almost the same food every single day. After we killed a cockroach ourselves, a staff member came to remove it and even found the situation amusing. For a hotel of this standard, this is completely unacceptable. It is unhygienic, dirty, and definitely not worthy of a 5-star rating. The rooms are not properly cleaned. During our entire 10-day stay, the floor was not mopped even once. The towels were often incomplete, with items missing. The toilet smelled bad all the time, and even the private pool area was not cleaned regularly. Overall, this was a huge disappointment and nowhere near the level of service and cleanliness you would expect from a luxury 5-star hotel. We would not recommend staying here.”

“Absolutely amazing, the whole experience, from being taken by a nice golf cart ride straight to the restaurant, to the lovely lady who has greeted me as soon as I stepped out of the go-cart, to the great service provided, especially by Valentina, and the amazing food, awesome food, thanks a lot to the chefs! The views and atmosphere are 11 out of 10 to say the least.”

“The hotel was amazing , total white with minimal tones everywhere in every point . The restaurants especially the elemes (Cretan restaurant) was so tasty, a menu with traditional plates. The room was big enough and comfortable for 2-3 people !!!! We are gonna be back soon , we’ll miss you !”

“Highly recommended, beautiful and especially good because of: -cleanliness (rooms outstanding!), -friendliness of staff (Nikos and Mikail from Buddha Bar as well as the ladies, Agni from Elemes, Aurelia and her colleagues from Guest relation and the reception) -food and drinks and of course design and music (for me one of the best reasons to come back) personal services I'm planning to come back for Yoga retreats! Thanks a lot to the incredible Management and staff!”
