An official French distinction above five stars — only around a dozen Paris hotels hold it. It means historic buildings, starred restaurants, legendary service and prices to match: this is perhaps the world's most exclusive hotel scene.
The Riviera: May–September, though you may want to avoid the film-festival weeks in Cannes unless you're there for exactly that. Paris works year-round; spring and early autumn are loveliest, while winter brings the best rates at the top hotels.
France is Europe's priciest at the top: Paris palace hotels often start around €900–1,000 a night, and the Riviera in high season is not far behind. "Ordinary" five-star starts around €350–550 — and Corsica offers the most island luxury for the money.
