Dubrovnik leads, with hotels on the cliffs around the walled old town, Hvar is the glamorous heart of the islands, and Split combines the history of Diocletian's Palace with a growing boutique-hotel scene.

Dubrovnik for iconic views and history — and hotels with the Adriatic directly below your balcony. Hvar for island life, with luxury beach clubs and lavender landscapes both. Split for the best logistics: city, beach and island ferries in one.

May–September. July–August is warmest but also busiest, especially in Dubrovnik — June and September deliver the same sea temperatures with more pleasant old towns and better rates.

Five-star usually starts around €250–450 a night; Dubrovnik's cliff resorts run higher in peak season. Split and the mainland coast generally give you more for your money than Dubrovnik and Hvar.

Excellent — the Adriatic ferry network makes it easy to combine Split, Hvar and Dubrovnik in one trip. Many also charter a skippered boat between the islands; several luxury hotels arrange transfer boats and excursions.

The old town can get very full in the middle of the day in high season, when the cruise ships are in. The trick: stay at a luxury hotel just outside the walls with its own beach club, enjoy the town early morning and evening — and spend beach days on Lokrum or the Elaphiti islands.
