Tripplo's verdict, based on guest reviews
Tripplo’s analysis · Updated 14 October 2026 · How we review hotels
Ambassade Hotel suits travellers who want to wake up on one of Amsterdam's grand canals and explore the city on foot. Set in historic canal houses on the Herengracht, it puts Dam Square and the Anne Frank House within an easy walk, while the street itself stays fairly calm. Guests are warmest about the staff, who are described as delightful and genuinely helpful, and about the atmosphere: an arty lobby, a library overlooking the water and a romantic restaurant with tables along the canal. The canal-house setting also brings its trade-offs. Stairs are everywhere and some are steep, rooms range from spacious to very small, and lower floors can be noisy at night. Prices are high, and several guests felt it. Couples on a romantic city break who value character, service and location will feel at home; anyone who needs step-free access or a large room should weigh those points first.
Guests score it 9.1 out of 10 — the average across the 17 hotels we list in Amsterdam is 9.0.
What Guests Loved
- Location is the hotel's strongest point in reviews. The Herengracht puts almost everything within walking distance, Dam Square is about 700 metres away and the Anne Frank House around nine minutes on foot, yet guests describe the street itself as fairly quiet.
- Guests say it is the staff who make the stay special: helpful, professional and delightful, from holding luggage before check-in to small gestures such as a keychain memento to take home.
Things to Consider
- Several guests found the hotel expensive, and value for money is where reviews are least generous, even though most feel the location and service make up for it.
- The canal-house setting means stairs are everywhere, including at the entrance, and some staircases up to rooms are steep. There is a lift, which guests with limited mobility appreciated, but it does not remove every step.
Should you book it?
Ambassade Hotel is worth booking for couples on a romantic city break — but pick somewhere else if you have trouble with stairs.
